So why do we have Red Ribbon Week? Seems kinda silly, some may say. But the importance of the week should not go unnoticed. 'Kiki' Camarena, a young man who worked his way through college, served as a Marine and later became a police officer, chose to make a difference. Kiki was sent undercover into Mexico to investigate a major drug cartel. On Feb. 7, 1985, Kiki was abducted by 5 men. His body was found a month later in a shallow grave.

In honor of Camarena's work against illegal drugs, those who knew of Kiki and his battles, began to wear red badges. As word began to get around, families whose lives had been effected by the destruction caused by alcohol and drugs, began to join in the fight against drugs. They chose to use Camarena's story as the bases for their groups, that truly, one person CAN make a difference!

In 1997, the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse showed their support for the Red Ribbon Campaign in Texas, by guaranteeing resources to carry on the message that alcohol and drugs destroy lives.

Here at Caddo Mills Middle School, we want our students to be aware that the choices made today, will in fact, effect their tomorrows. So we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week by having conversations, class assignments, announcements, theme days and candy messages. October 26-30 we will be doing some dress up days to bring awareness to drug and alcohol abuse.

  • Monday - Red Out Day - Remembering those whose lives have been destroyed or being destroyed by alcohol and drugs.

  • Tuesday - Career Day - What could you be without drugs!

  • Wednesday - Pajama Day - Don't cozy up to drugs and alcohol.

  • Thursday - School Spirit - Pink Out

  • Friday - School Spirit - Fox Nation Colors

Like Camarena's desire to make a difference, WE at Caddo Mills Middle School, want to make a difference!
