STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE
The Student Success Initiative (SSI) was created to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be academically successful in reading and math.
Under SSI, grade advancement requirements, students are required to pass the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in 8 math and reading tests to promote to ninth grade. Students will be given 3 opportunities to pass the STAAR Reading and Math tests. If a student does not pass one or both tests, the school must give the student additional instruction after each testing opportunity, and the student must participate in that instruction.
A parents' role in this process is important as they are their student's main cheerleader. If a student has not passed after the second administration, a grade placement committee (GPC) is formed. The GPC consists of the principal, teacher, and parent or guardian, and they will develop an instructional plan based on the needs of the student. If the student does not pass the third administration they are automatically retained. However, the student's parents may appeal the decision to have their child retained by submitting a request within 5 days of the notice. If the GPC agrees with the request, it is still necessary for the student to participate in any required additional instruction in order to be promoted.
Yes, 8th grade is an important academic year, but with us working as a team, your student will find success.
